Throughout the years, I have accumulated a number of products that are staples in my household, from cleaning products to pantry items. As a dietitian, I try to fill my home with products that are sustainable, clean, and support my health from the inside out.
I have been using this product for a number of years now and I absolutely swear by it. Four Sigmatic utilizes mushrooms, like Lion’s Mane and Reishi, to support brain function and immunity.4 It also includes a mix of plant proteins like hemp, chia, and pea. I personally struggle to digest whey protein (I get bloated, gassy, nauseous) and was on the hunt for a solid plant-based protein powder that provided me with great nutrients and protein for on-the-go. If this sounds like you, Four Sigmatic is one of my favorite recommendations. It also is an extremely reasonable price compared to other protein powders out there.
Vital Proteins: Continuing on the protein trend, collagen peptides by Vital Proteins is another product that I have been using for years and have recommended to family, friends, and clients. Collagen is a specific type of protein that has an important role for our skin, hair, and nail health.2 While research is new regarding the effectiveness of collagen supplements, I still find collagen peptides to be a great source of easily digestible protein that keeps me full and satisfied. One of my favorite parts about collagen is the consistency it gives to smoothies and liquids - it becomes this thick, frothy, creamy texture that I LOVE!
While nutrition and lifestyle have a huge impact on our hormonal health, environmental toxins play a large role on our hormones as well. The toxins found in common household products, like cleaners and detergents, can disrupt our endocrine system and cause a multitude of symptoms affecting our reproductive, immune, and brain health.3 I have slowly started to transition all of my old products to a cleaner, more natural variety. This includes my laundry detergent. You are constantly in contact with your detergent, from your clothes to your pillows, therefore having a detergent free of chemicals is key. Molly’s Suds has only 4 ingredients, and is hormone and Earth-friendly!
Green powders have been trending in social media over the past year and I first want to emphasize that powders do not replace a diet full of fruits and vegetables. It is pivotal that we still try to incorporate as many real fruits and vegetables in our day-to-day as possible, and not solely rely on a powder to give us vitamins and minerals. With that being said, I think the routine and boost that green powders provide can be a nice addition to your diet. I personally prefer this brand because of its green and digestive blend, as well as the breakdown of these nutrients. When choosing a green powder, you want to look at the gram value of each blend in comparison to the product as a whole.
The serving for this product is 7g (1 scoop).
4.1g (or over 50%) of the product consists of the greens blend, with 1.6g of the scoop containing the “detoxifying” aspect, and 1.1g of the scoop containing the “digestive” blend. The majority of the blend is greens, and the contents are very clearly described. In some popular green products, the ratio of greens to other contents is only 10-20% of the actual product - which means those “green benefits” they are highlighting are minimal.
5. Hemp hearts
Hemp hearts are a staple in my diet. They are a great source of protein and Omega-3 fats that are powerful for inflammation and hormone health. I love adding them to smoothies, oatmeal, yogurt, etc. The sourcing of seeds is extremely important however, as many brands have poor processing and packaging that can lead to hidden heavy metals (which can poorly affect our health). 1 It also is important that seeds are stored in a package that is not exposed to light (i.e. no clear packaging) to prevent spoiling. I love these hemp hearts from Manitoba because they check both of these boxes and emphasize quality in their product from start to finish.
